Will Power’s Future with Team Penske Under Review Amid Leadership Changes

Will Power, the two-time IndyCar Series champion and 2018 Indianapolis 500 victor, is approaching a crucial juncture in his career, as his status as a free agent will soon be addressed by Team Penske. Power, who has been with the team since 2009, has amassed 42 of his 44 IndyCar victories and a record-setting 65 of 71 poles in Penske machinery.

Originally expected to have his contract situation clarified by the end of May, organizational shifts within Team Penske have delayed this decision. Notably, the exits of team president Tim Cindric, managing director Ron Ruzewski, and team manager Kyle Moyer have left key leadership positions vacant, complicating discussions about Power’s future.

Penske Corporation president Bud Denker indicated that the decision-making process is imminent, stating, “The conversation is with myself, Roger Penske, and Jonathan Diuguid, who’s been over in Le Mans. It’s just a lot going on here in terms of the last really month and a half, from Indy to Detroit to this race and then testing.”

The focal point of the upcoming discussions will involve whether to extend Power’s contract or promote David Malukas from the No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing entry to fill Power’s seat. Denker expressed the urgency to convene in the next month to reach a conclusion beneficial for both the team and Power, affirming, “It’s just a matter of us getting together here in the next month or so and to put our heads together and come up with a decision that’s great for us and great for Will.”

As the IndyCar and IMSA schedules intensify, Team Penske’s leadership will need to strategically navigate these changes to ensure competitive performance moving forward.
