VeeKay’s Indianapolis 500 Comes to a Sudden Halt After Impressive Drive

INDIANAPOLIS – Rinus VeeKay’s attempt at capturing the Indianapolis 500 title was abruptly cut short after an impressive comeback that saw him climb from 31st to 6th place. The Dutch driver, racing for Dale Coyne Racing, faced a challenging qualifying session, ultimately starting towards the back of the field.

Throughout the early laps, VeeKay showcased his exceptional driving skills, advancing rapidly through the pack. By lap 80, he was in a solid position, ahead of fellow competitor Josef Newgarden, who shared the last row with him on the grid. However, disaster struck during a routine pit stop on lap 81.

VeeKay reported a sudden loss of braking power, resulting in a spin that led him to collide with the pit wall at high speed. The damage to his No. 18 Honda was significant, with the right-rear suspension severely compromised, forcing an early exit from the race and leaving him in 30th place overall.

“I had no idea what was wrong,” VeeKay stated after the incident. “I pitted for tires and fuel. I had already pitted at speed once without issue. It just had no bite. I was going about 120 mph and had no response from the brakes. I locked up the left rear, and it came around on me.”

Despite the disappointing outcome, VeeKay’s performance prior to the incident reaffirms his growing reputation as a formidable contender in the Indianapolis 500.
