Power’s Pole Position Ends in Misfortune at Bommarito 500

In the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway, Will Power’s promising start ended in disappointment due to a critical tire failure. The two-time champion entered the race on pole for the first time in 2025, aiming to secure a victory and quell rumors about his future with Team Penske.

Power led the field initially but lost the top position to David Malukas of AJ Foyt Racing shortly after the green flag waved. Throughout the first stint, Power concentrated on fuel conservation, holding second place while Malukas built an early lead.

Tragedy struck on lap 47 when Power experienced a right-front tire failure entering turn 3, resulting in his No. 12 Chevrolet crashing into the outside wall. He managed to navigate the car back to pit road, albeit with significant suspension damage, which led to a 27th-place finish.

“I felt the stress on the car last night and knew it was a lot of load,” Power recounted to FOX Sports. “There’s nothing I could do there. Feel bad for everyone on the Verizon car.”

Despite the setback, Power’s resume continues to shine with his record 71st pole position, entering the race fifth in the championship standings and serving as the top representative for Team Penske. However, speculation around his contract status looms, with Malukas reportedly being considered as a potential successor.

Power expressed regret over the incident, stating, “We had a good car. I was saving fuel to manage the race, but nothing could prevent that tire failure. We’ll move on to the next one.”

The Bommarito 500 concludes with the specter of Power’s future at Team Penske hanging in the balance, as he looks ahead to upcoming challenges in the IndyCar series.
