Triumph and Ducati to Compete in 450SX: Significant Developments for 2026
Two historical brands, Triumph and Ducati, are set to make their motocross debut in the 450SX class in 2026. Triumph’s approach has been cautious, keeping details about its bike under wraps until recently. The company initially focused on the 250 class, with its 450 model announced this year but not set for racing until 2026. In contrast, Ducati has taken a more transparent route, revealing a prototype and testing it during the Italian MX Nationals, even though they currently do not offer a 250 version.
On January 6, just before the Anaheim 1 Supercross event, the Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati team will formally unveil riders Justin Barcia and Dylan Ferrandis. While the team provided headshots, details on the bikes and race strategies are still pending, leading to some speculation about the team’s readiness. Notably, Ferrandis posted a picture on social media but later removed it, reinforcing the notion of a strategic rollout.
Barcia faces a setback with a broken collarbone, complicating the team’s preparations and diminishing immediate expectations for race footage or rider updates. However, Team Manager Josh Wisenor and veteran technician Rick “Ziggy” Zielfelder are making strides in bike development, drawing positive feedback from riders including Antonio Cairoli regarding the bike’s suspension settings.
Triumph’s debut may be delayed due to Jordon Smith’s recent shoulder surgery from an injury sustained in the SMX finale, although the bike is expected to make its competitive appearance shortly.
In other news, the Vet Masters event in Georgia hosted over 500 entries, showcasing a successful weekend filled with competitive spirit across various classes, including Vintage and Women’s categories. This event highlighted the camaraderie and passion within the motocross community and proved to be a popular gathering for both participants and spectators.
As both Triumph and Ducati prepare for their 450SX entries, their contrasting methodologies will be pivotal as they strive for success in the highly competitive supercross arena.
