2023 Motocross of Nations: Belgium Claims Victory, Herlings Shines at Ernée
In a thrilling conclusion to the 2023 Motocross of Nations at Ernée, Belgium triumphed, marking their first victory since 2013. The race featured intense competition, highlighted by exceptional performances from top riders including Jeffrey Herlings and “Le Capitaine” Romain Febvre.
Herlings claimed the Fox Holeshot Award but faced early challenges as he fell to eighth place after a miscalculation while trying to pass Jago Geerts. Meanwhile, Febvre battled for supremacy but struggled initially, allowing riders like Simon Everts and Herlings to gain ground.
Despite a sluggish opening, Herlings surged back, moving through the pack effectively, and by lap five, he was solidly in fourth place, closing the gap to Everts. In a display of determination, he overtook Everts and later seized the lead from Jorge Prado on lap eleven, finishing an impressive twelve seconds ahead.
Febvre, who briefly fought for second before crashing into a trackside post, managed to recover to third place, solidifying his position in the overall rankings. Despite his setback, Febvre’s efforts secured vital points for Belgium.
The Coenen brothers also performed admirably; Sacha Coenen received the Ricky Carmichael Award for the best young rider, finishing third in the MX2 category and contributing to Belgium’s success. The Coenen family’s joy was palpable as they celebrated this pivotal moment, with the Everts family marking another chapter in their legacy at the Motocross of Nations.
Team Latvia secured a historic fourth place finish, thanks in part to Ben Watson’s top ten result, while Team GB concluded the event in seventh. Spain, despite high hopes, finished unable to keep pace, landing eighth overall.
As the season wraps up, the focus now shifts to the potential of Team Belgium’s young talent. The 2024 season promises to deliver more thrilling action, and fans can relive the memorable moments from 2023 on various platforms.
The excitement of motocross continues as we look forward to the next chapter in this dynamic sport.
