Hocevar-Stenhouse Tension Escalates Following Mexico City Controversy
Carson Hocevar finds himself at the center of controversy once again after an incident involving Ricky Stenhouse Jr. during the recent NASCAR Cup race in Mexico City. The aggressive racing style of Hocevar led to a collision with Stenhouse, who was driving the No. 47 Chevrolet. Notably, Hocevar was a lap down when he spun Stenhouse out, provoking a heated post-race confrontation where Stenhouse exclaimed, "I’m gonna beat your ass" upon returning to the United States.
Lack of Communication
In the aftermath, Hocevar remarked, "No, unfortunately, I haven’t spoken to him this week. There’s nothing I could say that would change anything." He acknowledged the mistake that led to the incident, emphasizing that it was a racing error rather than intentional aggression.
Despite their strained relationship, Hocevar expressed a desire to connect with Stenhouse, particularly regarding their shared interest in sprint car racing. However, he recognizes the rift created by the incidents, noting, "The scorecard has me ahead right now, unfortunately."
Future Fallout
Looking ahead to the Pocono race, Hocevar qualified third while Stenhouse will start in 30th position. Hocevar anticipates Stenhouse might seek retribution but clarified, "It’s not open hunting season on the 77. It’s just the 47 when he wants to take a shot at us." He reiterated that his team has assured him that they will maintain a standard of racing that prevents unnecessary vendettas.
Accepting Consequences
Hocevar is prepared for whatever may come his way, stating, "It could be tomorrow or it could be six months from now. I’ve been a fan of the sport for a long time and seen these stories before."
In addition to the tension with Stenhouse, Hocevar recently faced internal penalties from Spire Motorsports for derogatory comments made about Mexico, resulting in a $50,000 fine and mandatory sensitivity training. Reflecting on his comments, he noted that they stemmed from a lack of firsthand experience: "I didn’t give it a fair shot. Hindsight’s 20/20."
As the season progresses, both Hocevar and Stenhouse’s actions on and off the track will be closely watched, as tensions simmer beneath the surface.
