Connor Zilisch Captures First Oval Victory at Pocono Raceway Under Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Guidance
In a thrilling NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Pocono Raceway on Saturday, 18-year-old Connor Zilisch secured his first oval victory, aided by the mentorship of crew chief Dale Earnhardt Jr., co-owner of JR Motorsports. Zilisch clinched the win by overtaking Jesse Love just a few laps before the finish, showcasing his growing prowess in the sport.
“I’ve been dying for this one for a while now,” stated Zilisch. “I’ve been so close on the ovals lately. Dale Jr. is not so bad on the box. It’s pretty cool to have him up there.”
Earnhardt Jr. reflected on the experience and the team’s strategy: “Marty [Lindley] did a great job putting us in a position to succeed. We had a lot of good luck and great strategy. Connor is going to be a big deal in this sport for a long time.”
Zilisch’s victory was hard-fought, with a record ten cautions punctuating the 100-lap race. The final stage began with Zilisch leading, but numerous incidents kept the competitors on their toes. After a caution allowed Zilisch to maintain his lead, he navigated several restarts and avoided significant mishaps to secure his position.
Christian Eckes achieved his career-best finish in third place, followed by pole-sitter Chase Elliott in fourth and Ryan Sieg in fifth. The remaining top ten featured Carson Kvapil, Sam Mayer, Sammy Smith, Taylor Gray, and Justin Allgaier.
Zilisch’s win marks his third career victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, making him the ninth individual to win as a driver, owner, and crew chief in NASCAR history.
“This is a huge step in my career,” Zilisch commented. “Thanks to everyone at JR Motorsports for believing in me.”
As the series progresses, Zilisch’s performance suggests he is a rising star to watch in upcoming races.
