Denny Hamlin Secures Victory at FireKeepers Casino 400; Ty Gibbs Battles to Third

Gibbs, starting eighth, initially faced challenges as he dropped to the back of the top 30, struggling with handling on his No. 54 Toyota. Despite not scoring stage points and not leading during the race, Gibbs and his team strategized effectively, climbing back into contention as the race progressed.
As Hamlin and William Byron contended for the lead in the closing laps, Gibbs sat approximately half a second behind, poised for a potential late-race surge. However, caution regarding fuel conservation forced him to slow down, resulting in a loss of third place to Chris Buescher with just three laps remaining. Gibbs regained the position when Byron ran out of fuel approaching the white flag but ultimately finished 2 seconds behind Hamlin.
Post-race, Gibbs candidly reflected on the missed opportunity: “I wish we could have gone out and won, [but] that was not the option with the fuel spot we were in. Just very unfortunate.” Despite the disappointment, Gibbs’s third-place finish matched his best result of the season and snapped a five-race streak without a top-10 finish.
The 22-year-old driver entered the Michigan event ranked 27th in points, underscoring the urgency to secure a victory for another postseason appearance. “A win is more important than third, but it’s good to have a good finish,” Gibbs acknowledged. “I’m glad we could come back and get better.
