Hamlin Clinches Victory at South Point 400, Secures Title Shot

Las Vegas, NV – Denny Hamlin achieved a pivotal victory in the NASCAR Cup Series’ South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, marking his 60th career win and sixth of the season. The triumph solidifies his position in the upcoming Championship Race on November 2 at Phoenix Raceway.

In a thrilling finish, Hamlin overtook his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe with four laps to go, ultimately crossing the finish line 1.533 seconds ahead of Kyle Larson, who dominated the race by leading 129 laps. This win is emotional for Hamlin, as he dedicated it to his ailing father.

“This win means a lot… I just put the pedal down those last 10 laps and made it happen,” said Hamlin, visibly moved at the post-race interview. He commended his crew, particularly crew chief Chris Gayle, for their strategic calls.

Briscoe, who initially led with a two-tire strategy on the final pit stop, finished fourth. Despite being disappointed, he expressed pride in his team’s efforts and acknowledged the strong competition.

“Our car drove really good… but just really loose there at the end,” Briscoe remarked.

Kyle Larson, despite his early dominance, recognized Hamlin’s speed in the closing stages. “He did a great job… I felt like I was doing all I could to stay in front of him,” Larson stated.

The race also produced key implications for the playoff standings. With two races remaining, Larson holds a 35-point cushion above the playoff cutline, while Hamlin’s victory puts him in a strong position moving forward. Christopher Bell finished third, gaining a 20-point advantage in playoff standings.

Notably, reigning champion Joey Logano executed a two-tire strategy, finishing sixth, while key contenders such as Chase Elliott and William Byron faced challenges that pushed them down in the standings. Byron’s late-race collision left him 15 points below the cutoff line.

Nascar heads to Talladega Superspeedway next for the Yellawood 500, with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. as the defending champion.
