Heims Dominates at Watkins Glen: Wins Mission 176 in Dramatic Overtime Finish

Watkins Glen, NY – In a thrilling conclusion to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ Mission 176, Corey Heim solidified his championship lead by clinching his fourth consecutive road course victory. The 23-year-old driver secured his sixth career win, crossing the finish line just 0.202 seconds ahead of former NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Daniel Hemric, with rookie Giovanni Ruggiero trailing in third.

Heim, piloting the No. 11 Tricon Garage Toyota, showcased his skill with masterful restarts throughout the race, particularly during the critical three overtime periods. He led for a race-high 44 laps but faced challenges after a late restart which saw him drop to 11th place. "Just never give up," Heim stated after the race, reflecting on his ability to rally back from adversity.

The race at the 2.45-mile course experienced a mix of calm and chaos. Initially, only a few cautions were noted, but multiple incidents later led to six additional caution periods. Heim’s strategic driving allowed him to maintain the lead even after battling fuel pickup issues late in the final overtime.

Christopher Bell, driving the No. 52 Halmar Friesen Racing Toyota in support of owner Stewart Friesen, who is recovering from serious injuries, initially led under a late-race fuel-saving strategy but finished fourth after being forced to pit. After a challenging race, Tyler Ankrum, Sammy Smith, Ty Majeski, Connor Zilisch, Matt Mills, and Layne Riggs rounded out the top ten.

Notably, the race’s outcome has significant implications for the upcoming playoffs. Friesen secured a playoff position earlier this season, but his absence may open an additional spot for other drivers. Currently, Ty Majeski and Jake Garcia maintain a slim advantage over Ben Rhodes, who faced a disappointing finish at 26th despite winning Stage 2. Garcia is now positioned 11 points ahead of Rhodes heading into the final regular-season race.

The series shifts to Richmond Raceway for the eero 250 next Friday night, where Majeski will defend his title. The championship picture remains tense as teams prepare for the decisive finale.

Next Race: Richmond, VA – eero 250, Friday, 7:30 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
