Austin Hill Secures Victory in Dramatic Overtime at Talladega
Talladega, AL – Austin Hill of Richard Childress Racing (RCR) clinched victory at the United Rentals 250, showcasing his dominance on NASCAR’s drafting-style tracks. The veteran driver led 48 of the 100 laps, including a crucial final dash after an overtime restart, ultimately finishing just 0.105 seconds ahead of Carson Kvapil from JR Motorsports.
This win marks Hill’s second consecutive victory at Talladega this season and his 10th success on drafting tracks, surpassing legends Dale Earnhardt and Tony Stewart, each with eight wins in this category. Despite being eliminated from driver’s championship contention, Hill’s performance secures RCR a spot in the 2025 owner’s championship.
In his post-race comments, Hill emphasized strategy during the final laps, stating, “If you’re in a green-white-checkered, you probably just go to the bottom [of the track] because of how crazy the second and third lane were at the end.” He expressed pride in racing for RCR and his desire to aim for the owner’s championship, saying, “To lock ourselves in for the owner’s championship means the world to me.”
Kvapil’s strong finish positions him favorably for the upcoming championship round, while his teammate Justin Allgaier finished third, securing his spot in the final four for the season finale at Phoenix. Rookie Connor Zilisch, despite setbacks, retained enough points for a championship bid, even after finishing 23rd due to a late-race accident.
Key Playoff contending drivers faced challenges during the race. Sheldon Creed and Sam Mayer, both from the Haas Factory Team, were eliminated in an early pileup. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Brandon Jones sustained damage but managed to finish several laps down, placing him sixth in the standings, just below the cutoff line.
On a positive note, Kaulig Racing’s Christian Eckes finished fourth, marking his sixth top-five finish of the year, while Caesar Bacarella achieved a career-best fifth place.
