Hocevar Wins All-Star Race Open; Nemechek Secures Runner-Up Spot
Carson Hocevar emerged victorious in the NASCAR All-Star Race Open, leveraging a strategic two-tire pit stop to take the lead. John Hunter Nemechek finished closely behind, securing a second-place finish and a spot in the All-Star Race.
“It’s super big for this group, this team," said Hocevar. "Winning is great, especially with tire challenges. We need to work on our car, but it’s encouraging to be quick despite that.”
Nemechek expressed his excitement for the upcoming race, noting, “I’m proud of the effort our No. 42 team put in. We found speed and the two-tire call at the end helped us get to where we needed to be.”
Race Highlights
The Open race saw Erik Jones slide into third, followed by Ty Dillon and Zane Smith in fourth and fifth, respectively. Pole-sitter Shane van Gisbergen faced adversity, dropping five spots after opting not to take two tires during a crucial pit stop, a decision that proved costly.
Noah Gragson won the Fan Vote, earning the final position in the All-Star Race. “The fans are the GOATs. It’s awesome to be part of this All-Star Race,” Gragson stated, credited his team for resolving balance issues during the Open.
Key Incidents and Strategy
Van Gisbergen initially dominated, but the race shifted during the competition caution halfway through. Several drivers—including Nemechek—opted for two tires, enabling Hocevar to take command. A pivotal incident involved Riley Herbst, who was sent into the wall after contact from McDowell.
Ryan Preece’s race took a turn when he made a mistake under caution, running over the choose box and forcing a rear-of-the-field restart. Nemechek took advantage of the situation, moving into the final transfer spot following a strong restart.
As the race concluded under green, Hocevar and Nemechek maintained their positions to secure their spots for the All-Star Race, while tensions flared post-race between van Gisbergen and Todd Gilliland, culminating in contact during the cool-down lap.
The All-Star Race promises high stakes with both Hocevar and Nemechek eager for the million-dollar prize.
