Hamlin and Wallace Address Kansas Speedway Incident
Charlotte, NC – Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace convened for an important discussion at the Charlotte Roval, six days after their contentious finish at Kansas Speedway, where a last-lap collision derailed both drivers’ chances for victory, ultimately allowing Chase Elliott to secure the win.
“I got a lot of stuff going on, so we knew we’d been at the same place, same time here,” Hamlin stated regarding the delay.
During their meeting, Wallace clarified he held no resentment towards Hamlin for the incident, which occurred during double overtime when Hamlin attempted to overtake Wallace, causing both cars to slide up the track. While he expressed understanding, Wallace acknowledged lingering feelings from the clash.
Hamlin emphasized the significance of listening in their conversation, stating, “I think it’s important that I listen… I feel as though it was important for me to listen to his perspective and share mine.” He refrained from disclosing specifics of their discussion but indicated that mutual respect remains intact.
After the Kansas race, Wallace displayed mixed emotions, initially greeting Hamlin with a handshake but quickly walking away. Reflecting on the post-race atmosphere, Hamlin remarked, “I didn’t know he was upset… Truthfully, I should have at least checked to make sure. That’s on me.”
The situation marks a pivotal moment for Hamlin, who also serves as a co-owner of 23XI Racing, the team that employs Wallace. Hamlin acknowledged the complexities of managing both roles, stating, “That’s the first time we’ve been racing for the win… I certainly hope this was not the last.”
As the NASCAR season progresses, both drivers now navigate the expectations of collaboration amidst competition, a challenge typical in motorsports but amplified by their unique relationship.
