Joe White Fired by Kaulig Racing Ahead of Talladega Weekend

In a surprising development, Joe White has been terminated from his position as spotter for Ty Gibbs at Kaulig Racing, just ahead of the prestigious race weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. White confirmed his dismissal on social media, stating, “Got to Talladega. Parked the bus, got fired. In an Uber to the airport to go home for the weekend.”

This decision follows a controversial incident at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where Gibbs’ teammate Austin Dillon was involved in a significant crash with playoff driver William Byron. As Dillon slowed to pit in Turn 4, Byron collided with his rear, claiming he was unaware of Dillon’s pit stop intentions.

“I never saw him wave, so I didn’t see any indication that he was pitting,” Byron explained. He added that he believed the pit cycle had concluded and expressed regret over the incident, stating, “I had zero idea.”

Dillon defended his actions and emphasized that he had followed standard procedures. He reported that White had communicated with Byron’s spotter, Brandon Lines, regarding the pit stop. “Maybe I didn’t wave him off enough, but I feel like at this level, you kind of trust your spotter to do that,” Dillon said, underlining the unexpected nature of the crash.

White further clarified the situation, insisting he had attempted to make eye contact and used hand signals to indicate the impending pit stop. “I pointed to the bottom, twice, and mouthed the words ‘we’re pitting.’ Obviously, that was misunderstood,” he stated.

Following White’s departure, Frank Deiny will step in to serve as Dillon’s spotter for the upcoming race at Talladega. This unexpected management shake-up raises questions about communication protocols within teams, particularly in high-pressure scenarios such as pit stops.
