Keselowski’s Strategy Falls Short Amid Caution-Filled Finale at Iowa Speedway
Brad Keselowski put forth a commendable effort at Iowa Speedway but ultimately finished third, continuing his winless streak this season. The 2012 Cup Series champion displayed dominance at the start, winning the first two stages and leading for 68 laps, though strategic miscalculations in the final stretch hampered his chances.
The race unfolded with a series of long runs initially, but by the halfway point, frequent cautions altered the strategy landscape. Cautions plagued Stage 3, resulting in 51 laps under yellow, which allowed competitors like William Byron to conserve fuel.
Keselowski’s team opted for a conservative strategy, pitting under yellow with 119 laps to go, a decision that backfired as more aggressive teams cycled through ahead of him. Despite recovering to third place late in the race, he was unable to challenge Byron or Chase Briscoe for the lead.
“We had so many yellows in Stage 3 that it got the No. 24 and the No. 19 to where they could make it on fuel, pitting way outside the window,” Keselowski stated post-race. “I got back by a lot of guys, but that was as far as I could get.”
Keselowski had hoped for a scenario in which Byron would run out of fuel, but the latter managed to secure the victory. With three races remaining before the playoffs, Keselowski is still seeking a critical win to qualify. Currently, he sits 24th in the standings, while RFK Racing remains in the playoff conversation via teammate Chris Buescher, who is above the cutline on points, yet still 40 points behind the cutoff for guaranteed playoff spots.
As the season winds down, Keselowski’s ability to secure a postseason berth hinges on both his performance and race outcomes in the upcoming rounds.
