NASCAR Faces Ongoing Criticism of Next Gen Cup Cars

Since their introduction in 2022, NASCAR’s Next Gen Cup cars have been scrutinized, with a primary concern emerging: difficulty in overtaking rivals. While progress has been made, many drivers still feel constrained, particularly on various tracks beyond Kansas, leaving them frustrated and powerless.

Kyle Larson, the most successful driver in the Next Gen era, addressed this ongoing debate. “We drivers were part of the controversy because we were complaining just as much as everyone else,” Larson remarked. He acknowledged that excitement levels could shift rapidly, but the prevailing sentiment among peers indicates a pressing desire for enhanced racing dynamics. “We’d love to see better racing. Finding that solution is always tough.”

Calls for Increased Horsepower

The current horsepower level stands at 670HP, an increase from the 550HP package seen in the Gen-6 era. However, several drivers and fans are advocating for a further boost to 750HP. Larson, while not explicitly demanding this change, expressed openness to new approaches: “I think we would be all for trying something new. It’s a decent size increase, but it’s not massive. It’s gotten a little bit stale, so a drastic change might help.”

This perspective emphasizes the growing consensus within the NASCAR community that further adjustments may be necessary to revitalize competitive racing across the series.
