Larson Suffers Back-to-Back Setbacks in Indy and Charlotte

Kyle Larson faced a challenging weekend, experiencing two incomplete races at the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. His hopes for a successful dual-event were dashed after a crash at Indianapolis and an early exit in Charlotte.

"I hate the way the day went," Larson expressed post-race. "I wish I could hit reset and try again tomorrow, but that’s not going to happen. I feel terrible for everyone at Hendrick Motorsports for all the effort they put in."

The incident in Indianapolis came on lap 92 when Larson lost control in Turn 2, forcing him to withdraw from the race. The early exit allowed him to transition to Charlotte with sufficient time before the Coca-Cola 600.

Starting second, Larson quickly asserted his presence by leading the first lap of the 600. He briefly lost first place to teammate William Byron but regained the lead by lap nine. However, the race took a turn for the worse on lap 42 when Larson spun off Turn 4 after making contact with the wall.

“I got loose leading early and smacked the wall,” Larson reflected. “I thought our team was doing a good job to get the car in better shape; we were looking to contend for a decent finish.”

Larson’s night ended prematurely on lap 246. In a collision instigated by Daniel Suarez, Larson was caught up in a multi-car wreck involving Chase Briscoe and Ryan Blaney.

“What I’m feeling to end the night feels very similar to last year—very tough,” Larson lamented. “But it wasn’t meant to be, I guess.”

Regarding his future in the double-header challenge, Larson, who is on a two-year deal with Arrow McLaren for the Indianapolis 500, stated that the logistics are daunting. "Even if I didn’t wreck, I don’t think I would have made it here in time," he said, indicating the difficulty of competing in both events simultaneously. "I would love to run the Indy 500 again, but doing the double is logistically too tough."

Larson becomes the sixth driver to attempt this challenging double-header, a feat only completed by Tony Stewart in 2001.
