NASCAR Announces Horsepower Increase for 2026 Season

NASCAR has confirmed a significant increase in horsepower for the 2026 season, raising the limit from 670 to 750 for specific tracks. This adjustment will affect all road courses, street courses, and ovals shorter than 1.5 miles, encompassing a total of 17 racetracks.

Key Tracks Affected:

  • Bowman Gray Stadium
  • Circuit of The Americas
  • Phoenix Raceway
  • Darlington Raceway
  • Martinsville Speedway
  • Bristol Motor Speedway
  • Watkins Glen International
  • Dover Motor Speedway
  • Nashville Superspeedway
  • San Diego Street Course
  • Sonoma Raceway
  • North Wilkesboro Speedway
  • Iowa Speedway
  • Richmond Raceway
  • New Hampshire Motor Speedway
  • World Wide Technology Raceway
  • Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course

NASCAR’s Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer, John Probst, emphasized the organization’s commitment to engaging with stakeholders, including fans, drivers, and teams. “Our fans are very passionate, and their candid feedback is crucial. We are working on enhancements in the background and value their input,” Probst stated.

The decision comes amid ongoing debates regarding on-track competitiveness on shorter ovals and road courses, especially since the introduction of the Next Gen car in 2022. This initiative aligns with previous efforts to improve racing dynamics, including Goodyear’s development of softer tire compounds.

As NASCAR prepares for these changes, the focus remains on enhancing race quality and engagement for fans and competitors alike.
