North Wilkesboro Speedway Set to Host NASCAR Cup Series Points Race in 2026
NASCAR has officially included North Wilkesboro Speedway in its 2026 Cup Series schedule, marking its first points-paying race since 1996. The event is scheduled for mid-July, coinciding with TNT’s telecast of the season, featuring commentary by Dale Earnhardt Jr., a prominent advocate for the track’s revival.
NASCAR Executive Vice President Ben Kennedy highlighted the demand for this decision, stating that approximately 70% of fans, including a significant majority of millennials, supported the return of North Wilkesboro as a points venue. "We’re excited to make that change for them,” said Kennedy.
During its three-year tenure as host for the NASCAR All-Star Race, North Wilkesboro also welcomed the Craftsman Truck Series, further solidifying its capability to host major events. However, the facility presents logistical challenges, notably the absence of a tunnel or bridge connecting the infield to the grandstands. Kennedy acknowledged this concern, indicating discussions with Speedway Motorsports are underway to enhance access for fans during race day.
North Wilkesboro will replace Dover Motor Speedway on the regular schedule, while Dover will host next year’s All-Star Race. This marks a significant transition for Dover, which has been a fixture on the NASCAR schedule since 1969 but will not feature a points race in 2026.
Kennedy confirmed that the All-Star Race at Dover will likely occur as a daytime event, due to the lack of lighting at the track. He emphasized that factors such as weather and fan experience were considered in selecting Dover as the 2026 All-Star venue.
As NASCAR gears up for these changes, logistical planning for North Wilkesboro remains a priority, ensuring a seamless experience for fans and competitors alike.
