Chastain’s Rapid Rise Followed by Practice Woe at Coca-Cola 600

Ross Chastain showcased impressive speed during practice for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, clocking in ninth overall after finishing second in the preceding NASCAR Truck race. His No. 1 Chevrolet demonstrated strong long-run performance, leading both the 10-lap and 20-lap averages.

However, disaster struck when Chastain suffered a left-rear tire failure, leading to a significant spin in Turn 3 and a hard crash into the outside wall. The vehicle was towed back to the pits after coming to rest on the apron. The cause of the tire failure remains under investigation, but low air pressures have been problematic for other teams in recent events.

Chastain described the incident: "Just down the backstretch, all of the air came out of it at once. I tried to keep it straight and braked as hard as I could, but it was too late."

In contrast, Kyle Busch faced his own challenges. The newly re-signed Richard Childress Racing driver reported a steering issue that prevented him from completing any laps during practice. The team quickly replaced the power steering pump, allowing Busch to participate in qualifying, though he will likely start from the back of the field.

Notably, Carson Hocevar led the single-lap speeds during practice, with Ty Gibbs and AJ Allmendinger following closely behind. Chastain, meanwhile, will start in the 40th position for NASCAR’s longest race of the season.
