Spire Motorsports Imposes Fine on Carson Hocevar Following Controversial Comments

Spire Motorsports has issued a $50,000 fine to driver Carson Hocevar after he made derogatory remarks about Mexico City during a live Twitch stream. The organization will donate the full amount to three charities serving local communities: Cruz Roja Mexicana (Mexican Red Cross), Un Kilo de Ayuda, and Fondo Unido México (United Way Mexico).

In addition to the fine, Hocevar is required to undergo cultural sensitivity and bias awareness training. The decision, made in consultation with NASCAR, underscores Spire Motorsports’ commitment to core values of respect and accountability.

"Respect is not a slogan," the team stated. "These comments did not represent the views of Spire Motorsports or NASCAR." Hocevar publicly acknowledged his mistake and issued an apology, emphasizing his commitment to personal accountability.

The controversy erupted when Hocevar, during a Twitch stream, responded to a fan’s inquiry about the NASCAR experience in Mexico. His comments, which included criticisms of safety and travel conditions, sparked widespread backlash on social media.

After facing criticism, Hocevar expressed regret on his official X account, stating, “I am embarrassed by my comments… Consider me an ally going forward.” He recognized the importance of experiencing different cultures firsthand rather than forming opinions based on hearsay.

Spire Motorsports plans to continue promoting NASCAR’s growth globally while respecting local customs and communities. The team sees this incident as a learning opportunity and reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a welcoming environment for fans and partners alike.
