Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Team Prepares for Crucial Martinsville Race
As the NASCAR Cup Series postseason heads to Martinsville Speedway for its final elimination race, Cliff Daniels, crew chief for the Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 team, expressed confidence in the strength of his team. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” Daniels stated, emphasizing the resilience developed through a challenging season.
The No. 5 team enters the race with a 36-point cushion in the playoffs, positioned in the final transfer spot. Despite not clinching a Cup Series victory since mid-May, driver Kyle Larson’s recent performance indicates a resurgence, including four top-10 finishes in the last five races and two second-place results in the past three events.
“We have the team that’s ready to fight and compete together every week,” Larson noted, highlighting the importance of team cohesion and their ambitions for the upcoming weeks.
This season has seen the No. 5 team navigate a challenging summer, where Larson admitted to experiencing a slump, leading just 51 laps over a 14-race span. Nonetheless, he began the playoffs as the No. 1 seed and now leads the series in stage wins with 10 and laps led at 1,106. Additionally, he holds the second-most top-10 finishes (20) and ranks third in playoff points (32).
Daniels expressed pride in the team’s resilience and commitment, particularly following the strategic change in pit crew before the spring race at Darlington. He noted that the transition aimed to enhance group speed pitside, reinforcing the team’s dynamic without attributing blame for past challenges.
The team’s fortitude was further tested with the passing of PR representative Jon Edewards, prompting a dominating performance at Bristol shortly thereafter. “The culture of our team has never been stronger,” said Daniels, reiterating the solidified bond among team members.
As Larson approaches the Martinsville race, he is just one point behind Christopher Bell in the playoff standings, with teammate William Byron sitting just outside the cutline. The upcoming race is critical for securing advancement to the next playoff round.
