Van Gisbergen Dominates Watkins Glen for Fourth Road Course Win
Watkins Glen, NY – Shane van Gisbergen secured his fourth NASCAR Cup Series road course victory of the season at Watkins Glen International, crossing the finish line 11.116 seconds ahead of runner-up Christopher Bell. The 36-year-old New Zealander dominated the race, leading 38 of the 90 laps, including the final 17, in his No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet.
This victory marks van Gisbergen’s second win this season with a significant margin, further establishing him as a formidable presence in NASCAR’s road course events. His performance at Watkins Glen coincided with the announcement of a multi-year contract extension with Trackhouse Racing, underscoring his pivotal role with the team.
“It’s good to get that one back,” van Gisbergen said, referencing his second-place finish at the same track last year. “The car was just amazing again. Another win. Awesome.”
As he continues to make his mark in his first full-time season, van Gisbergen’s four victories tie him with Denny Hamlin for the most wins in the series this year, solidifying his status as a serious contender.
Christopher Bell, who finished second after overtaking Chris Buescher on the final lap, acknowledged the challenge posed by van Gisbergen. “The cars have been good… but frustrated to get our butts kicked by the No. 88 car,” Bell stated.
Buescher maintained a strong performance, finishing third. He remains in a crucial playoff position, ahead by 34 points over teammate Ryan Preece. “Had a fast race car again… but just got used up really hard,” said Buescher, reflecting on his battle for track position.
Current series leader William Byron finished fourth, extending his points lead to 42 over teammate Chase Elliott, who suffered a rare finish outside the top 20 in 26th place. Chase Briscoe took fifth, completing a last-lap pass on Ryan Blaney.
The field is now entering the final stretch of the regular season, with only two races left before the playoffs: Richmond and Daytona. The playoff picture remains competitive, particularly with Preece and Kyle Busch on the verge of elimination.
The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Richmond Raceway for the Cook Out 400 on Saturday night, with critical implications for the playoff standings.
