James Small: A Season of Redemption in 2025

In the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series, crew chief James Small faced substantial scrutiny as the team of driver Chase Briscoe shattered expectations by securing three wins and clinching a spot in the Championship 4. This resurgence comes in response to persistent criticism questioning Small’s competencies as a crew chief.

Briscoe’s performance metrics illustrate the efficacy of their partnership—he captured the most pole positions, recorded the second-most top-10 finishes, and tied for the highest rate of top-five finishes and lead-lap completions. Reflecting on the season, Small stated, “We’ve been incredibly consistent and incredibly fast… it was a huge learning experience in trying to better myself as a crew chief.”

The team entered the season with high hopes, achieving an early pole for the Daytona 500. However, early inconsistencies hindered smooth operations amid adjustments to a new car and team dynamics. Small noted a pivotal turning point occurred during the opening Kansas race when everything “just kind of clicked,” allowing the team to refine processes and work ethic.

Finishing third in the championship marks a career-best for Briscoe and represents the team’s first top-five finish in the standings since 2021, a significant milestone in Small’s tenure. Emphasizing growth through experience, Small commented, “It’s about trying to remain calmer throughout the races… every rep helps.”

Looking ahead to 2026, Small expressed confidence in maintaining momentum, indicating no further learning curve is expected: “We have a really, really great team… it’s how successful can we be?” This optimism signals a new chapter for Small, who aims to transform criticism into championship contention.
