Connor Zilisch Claims First Oval Win at Pocono in NASCAR Xfinity Series

Connor Zilisch, the 18-year-old rookie driver for JR Motorsports, clinched his first oval victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series during the Explore the Pocono Mountains 250 at Pocono Raceway. Zilisch triumphed in a tense showdown against his close friend, Jesse Love, securing the checkered flag with a 0.437-second lead after a late-race sprint.

The race was characterized by strategic calls and ten caution flags that affected multiple competitors. Zilisch faced significant challenges throughout the event, notably from former NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott, who led the most laps with 38 out of 100 but ultimately finished fourth.

Zilisch’s win was made more remarkable by the presence of Dale Earnhardt Jr., who filled in as crew chief for Mardy Lindley, who was suspended for the race. Earnhardt brought years of racing insight to the pit box and actively contributed during pit stops, celebrating the victory as a milestone in his crew chiefing debut.

“It’s been amazing all weekend long. Great race car driver. Connor Zilisch is going to be a big deal in this sport for a long time,” Earnhardt stated post-race.

Zilisch expressed his determination leading up to the race, saying, “I’ve been dying for this one for a while now; I’ve been so close on the ovals lately.” The victory marks his second of the season.

Jesse Love, who finished second, acknowledged the competitive nature of their battle, stating, “That’s the most focused I’ve ever been inside a race car. Hats off to Connor."

Completing the podium was Kaulig Racing’s Christian Eckes, who secured a career-best third place. Rounding out the top five were Elliott in fourth and Ryan Seig in fifth. The reigning champion Justin Allgaier maintains a commanding 82-point lead in the overall standings despite Austin Hill’s early-race accident that relegated him to a 35th-place finish.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series continues at Atlanta’s EchoPark Speedway for the Focused Health 250 on Friday night. Hill has won the last three races at this venue.
