Zilisch Claims First Career Oval Victory at Pocono
Pocono, PA – Connor Zilisch, a rookie with JR Motorsports, secured his first career oval win during the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ Explore the Pocono Mountains 250 on Saturday. The 18-year-old driver demonstrated skill and poise, clinching victory in a late-race showdown against close friend and competitor, Jesse Love.
Zilisch took the lead with three laps remaining, finishing ahead of the field by 0.437 seconds. This win marks his second of the season and comes after a series of near-misses on oval tracks, having finished second in both Charlotte and Nashville earlier this year.
“Incredible to finally get this one,” said Zilisch. “It was definitely special for me, and having Dale Jr. on the box was a huge boost.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr., serving as interim crew chief for the race, stepped in for Mardy Lindley, who was serving a one-race suspension. Earnhardt enthusiastically executed his roles, from tactical decision-making to assisting on pit stops.
“Connor did a great job, and I’m thrilled for our team,” Earnhardt remarked. “He’s going to be a big deal in this sport for a long time.”
Chase Elliott, the reigning Cup Series champion, led the race for 38 laps but ultimately finished fourth. Racing strategy played a critical role, as ten caution flags created numerous restart opportunities. Love capitalized on a chaotic restart with 13 laps to go, taking the lead but was unable to hold off Zilisch in the final laps.
“The most focused I’ve ever been,” said Love. “Hats off to him; he ran a good race.”
Christian Eckes rounded out the top three with a career-best third-place finish, while Ryan Seig completed the top five.
In the championship standings, Justin Allgaier continues to lead, holding an 82-point advantage over Austin Hill, who finished 35th after an early accident.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series will next head to Atlanta for the Focused Health 250 on Friday night. Hill aims to extend his winning streak at the venue, having won the last three races there.
