Valtteri Bottas Eyes 2026 F1 Return Amidst Changing Landscape

In a stagnant driver market for 2024, Valtteri Bottas has found himself reassessing his future in Formula 1 after the conclusion of the 2023 season. The Finnish driver, with 12 years of F1 experience and 10 Grand Prix victories, is currently serving as a third driver with Mercedes, where he has been lauded by team principal Toto Wolff and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli for his mentorship.
Bottas, 35, recognizes the importance of his role but remains eager to return to competitive racing. "Realistically, I think Mercedes are quite content with their pairing at the moment,” Bottas stated in a recent podcast. With a focus on long-term prospects, the team appears to favor Antonelli and George Russell over Bottas, particularly as Russell’s contract approaches its expiration in 2025.
The imminent driver reshuffle may also involve Red Bull, who plan to assess the performance of Yuki Tsunoda and consider changes following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. However, Bottas expressed skepticism regarding a potential move, citing Red Bull’s extensive driver academy as a barrier, noting, “I don’t know if they look outside their academy.”
Bottas has indicated that discussions with other teams could be underway, particularly with Alpine, who will transition to Mercedes power units in the near future. "They do have a Mercedes power unit for the future, which I think is a good call," he commented, emphasizing the benefits of his experience in a team that is seeking stability.
As F1 prepares to welcome Cadillac as an 11th team in 2026, Bottas remains open to opportunities, albeit with reservations regarding the timeline. "I know my timeline for next year and what plans I need to make, which I think August is a pretty good target," he said.
While the market looks competitive, Bottas’ blend of experience and potential backing may position him favorably for a return. “If I would be there as a driver, it would actually be very interesting because you can start from scratch,” he reflected on the prospect of joining a new team.
The following months will be crucial as Bottas navigates the evolving landscape of F1, eyeing a seat that aligns with his aspirations for a return to full-time racing.
