RFK Racing President Steve Newmark to Depart for UNC Athletics
Steve Newmark is set to leave his role as president of RFK Racing to join the University of North Carolina’s athletics department, effective August 15. After 15 years with RFK Racing, Newmark will initially serve as the executive associate athletic director before assuming the position of director of athletics next summer.
In a statement regarding his departure, Newmark expressed gratitude for his tenure: “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work alongside so many amazing people at RFK Racing. It has been a true privilege… I firmly believe the RFK team is in a great spot and poised for tremendous success both on and off the track.”
Newmark succeeded Geoff Smith as president in 2010, having joined RFK earlier that year as senior vice president of business operations. He previously acted as outside counsel for the organization since the early 2000s and was instrumental in the partnership between Jack Roush and Fenway Sports Group formed in 2007. Before his involvement in NASCAR, Newmark was a shareholder at the law firm Robinson, Bradshaw and Hinson, where he represented various stakeholders in the motorsports industry.
In recognition of his contributions, RFK Racing issued a statement of appreciation: “Steve has been instrumental in shaping the culture, growth, and success of our organization… We fully support his decision and are grateful he will remain engaged through the transition.”
As Newmark transitions to UNC Athletics, he expressed eagerness to return to his roots in Chapel Hill and contribute to one of the most respected college sports programs in the nation.
