Christian Horner Exits Red Bull Racing; Laurent Mekies Takes Helm
Milton Keynes, Oct 4, 2023 – In a significant shake-up at Red Bull Racing, team principal Christian Horner has been removed from his operational role effective immediately. The announcement, confirmed by Red Bull GmbH, came as a surprise to Horner, who has led the team since its formation in 2005.
Horner stated that he was informed of the decision on Tuesday evening. Upon addressing staff at the Milton Keynes headquarters on Wednesday, he expressed gratitude for his two-decade tenure, emphasizing the team’s evolution into a formidable force in Formula 1.
“I will still remain employed by the company, but operationally, the baton will be handed over. This obviously came as a shock,” Horner said. He reflected on his journey with Red Bull, acknowledging the contributions of the team members who have supported him throughout his tenure.
Former Racing Bulls team principal Laurent Mekies has been appointed to take over Horner’s dual roles as CEO and team principal. Mekies was announced as CEO earlier on Wednesday, prior to the confirmation of Horner’s departure.
Red Bull Racing’s statement underscored the ongoing commitment to excellence as the team transitions leadership. Further details regarding the strategic direction under Mekies remain forthcoming.
