NASCAR Announces Historic Race at Naval Base Coronado for 2026
NASCAR has confirmed a groundbreaking addition to its 2026 schedule: a race at Naval Base Coronado, set for Father’s Day weekend. This marked a significant milestone as it will be the first time NASCAR has conducted a race on an active military base.
Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s Executive Vice President and Chief Venue and Racing Innovation Officer, revealed that discussions about a military base race have been ongoing for several years. “We have been constantly evaluating our current schedule and thinking boldly about future events,” Kennedy noted.
The collaboration with Naval Base Coronado began years ago, leading to an unexpected and prolonged silence about the plans. The event will encompass all three NASCAR national series and feature a three-mile track entirely located within the naval base, as confirmed by Kennedy. The layout promises diverse challenges, including long straightaways and technical sections, and it is set against the scenic backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.
Kennedy emphasized the partnership with iRacing in developing a virtual rendition of the course, which has already undergone refinements based on feedback from NASCAR drivers. “It’s going to be an amazing track,” he affirmed.
The decision to host the race at a naval base aligns with NASCAR’s desire to reconnect with the Southern California market following the removal of Chicago from next year’s schedule. The event also coincides with the 250th anniversaries of both the United States and the Navy, highlighting a natural synergy between the sport and military appreciation.
As Kennedy stated, “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment for our sport,” making it a noteworthy addition to NASCAR’s evolving landscape. Further details, including the official course layout, will be unveiled in the fall.
