Connor Zilisch Dominates Xfinity Practice at Indianapolis Amid Weather Challenges
Indianapolis Motor Speedway—Connor Zilisch topped the charts in a rain-shortened practice session for the NASCAR Xfinity Series ahead of the Pennzoil 250, achieving a lap speed of 166.627 mph in the No. 88 WeatherTech Chevrolet for JR Motorsports. His performance was notably 1.5 mph faster than competitor Carson Kvapil, who clocked in at 165.132 mph in the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Clarience Tech Chevrolet.
The session was marred by inclement weather; lightning prompted a suspension shortly before heavy rain canceled scheduled practice for the NASCAR Cup Series.
Zilisch, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Tuesday, expressed enthusiasm about his time on the iconic oval. “Running across the bricks is always a special feeling,” he stated, emphasizing his excitement for the race.
Following Zilisch and Kvapil, Sam Mayer secured third with a fastest lap of 164.938 mph in the No. 41 Audibel Ford, while Justin Allgaier, the 2018 Pennzoil 250 winner, and reigning Brickyard 400 champion Kyle Larson rounded out the top five.
Incidents during the practice included a half-spin from Daniel Dye in the No. 10 Chevrolet, as well as a brush with the wall by Taylor Gray in the No. 54 Toyota. Both drivers were able to return to pit lane without major issues.
