Zilisch Set for NASCAR Cup Series Transition in 2026, Faces Steep Learning Curve
Indianapolis, IN – Connor Zilisch is set to join the NASCAR Cup Series in 2026, following Trackhouse Racing’s decision to part ways with current driver Daniel Suarez. Zilisch, who signed a development deal with Trackhouse prior to the 2024 season, has demonstrated promise in the Xfinity Series but is aware of the challenges that lie ahead.
The leap from the Xfinity Series to the Cup Series is widely recognized as formidable. "No driver is prepared for Cup Series racing," Zilisch acknowledged. He emphasized the depth of competition, noting that even routine positions in the Cup Series demand a level of skill and resilience rarely encountered in the Xfinity Series.
"I know it’s going to take time," Zilisch stated. "The car is very different, and there’s not much room for error." He anticipates a steep learning curve, stating, "There are going to be bad days, but as long as I see myself grow, I’ll be satisfied."
Zilisch’s transition comes amid a successful tenure in Xfinity, highlighted by a recent fifth win at Indianapolis. His pathway mirrors last year’s rise of Shane van Gisbergen, who secured three Xfinity wins before entering the Cup Series with a strong performance.
As Zilisch prepares for his Cup Series debut, Justin Marks of Trackhouse Racing has expressed confidence in his driver’s potential. "It’s about leveraging strengths on road and street courses while learning the ovals," Marks said. With six road and street courses slated for the 2025 schedule, Zilisch could capitalize on these opportunities as he hones his craft.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. weighed in on Zilisch’s impending transition, recognizing the necessity for him to adapt to the Cup Series’ Next Gen car dynamics. "He needs to understand how all that works, and the only way to do it is to get behind the wheel," Earnhardt remarked.
Although Zilisch may not yet be ‘ready’ for the Cup Series, his trajectory affirms his status as an emerging talent in NASCAR. As he embarks on this new chapter, he is bracing for both the challenges and the growth that await in NASCAR’s top tier.
For Zilisch, the time has come to "jump in the deep end"—a pivotal moment in a career that many believe is destined for greatness.
