In what has been a transformative season for Ryan Preece, the driver for RFK Racing has emerged as a key competitor in the NASCAR Cup Series. In his sixth full season, Preece reflects on his journey, stating, “Our sport is really naïve to some things… if you’re not in the equipment or the situation that is right.”
Preece’s career has been marked by significant challenges, from his time at JTG Daugherty Racing to a difficult stint in 2022 without a full-time ride. Aligning with Stewart-Haas Racing offered an opportunity, but performance expectations were low given the team’s struggles. Despite this, Preece demonstrated resilience, garnering two Xfinity Series wins with Joe Gibbs Racing before securing his current position with RFK Racing, where team co-owner Brad Keselowski recognized Preece’s untapped potential.
Under the guidance of crew chief Derrick Finley, Preece’s performance has steadily improved. He recently secured finishes of fourth at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and fifth at Iowa Speedway, solidifying his place as a consistent contender. Currently, Preece sits 13th in the championship standings—the highest ranking he has achieved this late in the season—bolstered by ten top-10 finishes, doubling his single-season career best from previous years, and three top-five finishes, a new career pinnacle.
Preece emphasizes the importance of experience in overcoming adversity: “I’ve been all over the map… I have a strong understanding of what it takes to win races.” This perspective contributes to his performance, as he simultaneously ranks third in the Cup Series for laps completed (99.3%) and fifth in total top-10 finishes.
The path ahead for Preece looks promising, and with his history of perseverance and newfound support at RFK Racing, he is not only proving his capability but also positioning himself as a serious contender moving forward. As Preece notes, success requires collective effort: “It takes the whole pie… and I’m happy the situation has turned out the way it has.”
