Connor Zilisch Claims Victory Amid Crash-Filled NASCAR Xfinity Series Race at Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen, NY – Connor Zilisch secured a hard-fought victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ Mission 200 at Watkins Glen International on Saturday, marking his second consecutive triumph at the historic road course. The 19-year-old driver led 60 of the 82 laps, finishing 2.326 seconds ahead of Sam Mayer from Haas Factory Team.
Zilisch’s celebration took a turn when he slipped while exiting his No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet. Medical personnel swiftly attended to him, and he was transported to a local hospital but was reported “awake and alert” by NASCAR officials.
The race was punctuated by significant drama, including a 45-minute red flag following a multi-car incident involving 16 vehicles with only eight laps remaining. The pileup was triggered when Austin Hill and Michael McDowell collided, forcing Zilisch to navigate swiftly through the chaos.
Both Zilisch and his teammate Shane van Gisbergen engaged in a tight battle at the front throughout the race. Contact between the two with 16 laps left resulted in van Gisbergen spinning off Zilisch’s front, although he did not place blame on Zilisch post-race. “I haven’t seen it yet,” van Gisbergen commented. “I’ll watch it later and work it out.”
Following the incident, Hill took the lead briefly until Zilisch recovered to reclaim his position and merge back into contention. Zilisch relayed to his crew, “He spun off my nose,” emphasizing his need to refocus.
The final results saw Zilisch, Sammy Smith (third), Hill (fourth), Carson Kvapil (fifth), and Justin Allgaier round out the top five. Austin Green, Christian Eckes, Brandon Jones, and Harrison Burton completed the top ten. With three races remaining before the playoffs, Zilisch leads Allgaier by seven points.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series will next race on August 22 at Daytona International Speedway, with Ryan Truex defending his title in the Wawa 250.
Further updates on Zilisch’s condition will be provided as information becomes available.
