Watkins Glen Race Report: Buescher Contends but Falls Short Against Van Gisbergen
Chris Buescher faced a critical challenge at Watkins Glen International as he vied for a place in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. His performance was strong, culminating in a third-place finish at the Go Bowling at the Glen, but it was not enough to secure a win.
Buescher, who led five laps during the race, noted, “We had a fast race car again and just definitely took the opportunity to capitalize on some big stage points there early.” His strategy included garnering stage points, positioning him well initially. However, he lost second place to Christopher Bell on the final lap, underscoring the fierce competition throughout the event.
The race was dominated by Shane van Gisbergen, who claimed victory, while pole-sitter Ryan Blaney led for 35 laps but ultimately finished sixth. Buescher’s performance marked his fourth consecutive top-10 finish at Watkins Glen, reinforcing his competitiveness at the circuit.
With only two races remaining in the regular season at Richmond and Daytona Beach, Buescher enters Richmond in the 16th and final playoff spot, holding a 34-point cushion above the cut line. “I’m an avid person against points racing, but I do understand our situation,” he reflected. Buescher emphasized the importance of maintaining pace: “Go to the next two weeks, be fast and it should take care of itself.”
As the regular season draws to a close, Buescher’s focus remains on achieving strong results to assure his playoff berth amid a challenging field.
