Denny Hamlin Secures Fifth Victory of the Season at Enjoy Illinois 300
In a thrilling display of strategy and skill, Denny Hamlin clinched his series-best fifth victory of the NASCAR Cup Series season at the Enjoy Illinois 300 on October 1, 2023. The pole winner outpaced Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe by 1.620 seconds at World Wide Technology Raceway, marking his first triumph at the 1.25-mile track and his 59th overall win.
Hamlin’s victory also celebrated a milestone for Toyota, representing the manufacturer’s 200th win in the NASCAR Cup Series. In a post-race interview, Hamlin reaffirmed his championship aspirations, stating, “You can either get on the bandwagon or get run over by it,” amid mixed reactions from the sellout crowd.
“This is a huge win for everyone at Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing,” Hamlin detailed. “Progressive Toyota was great there at the end. Fantastic day. Man, couldn’t be better.”
The race turned strategic as a caution on lap 209 led to a pivotal moment. After early pit stops by Hamlin and Briscoe, Hamlin reclaimed the lead from Brad Keselowski on the ensuing restart and maintained it until the checkered flag. Despite a pit road mishap that affected Briscoe, he managed to secure second place.
Briscoe reflected on his performance, noting, “I would say our strength was our speed… Our weakness was just the sloppiness.”
The results of the second playoff race have significant implications for the drivers’ standings, intensifying competition among those on the cutoff line. Austin Cindric finished 19th, managing to hold onto the 12th position in the playoff standings with a narrow 11-point lead over 13th-place Austin Dillon.
Notably, four-time winner Shane van Gisbergen finished 25th, further complicating his path as he fell 15 points below the elimination line. Alex Bowman (26th) now trails by 35 points, while Josh Berry’s crash resulted in another last-place finish, leaving him 45 points behind and in dire need of a win at Bristol to advance.
Among other playoff contenders, Briscoe secured the first stage win, while Bubba Wallace took Stage 2 honors, finishing eighth. Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, and Joey Logano rounded out the top five, reinstating the competitiveness of both Hendrick Motorsports and Team Penske.
In a notable incident, Kyle Larson caused Ryan Blaney to spin during Stage 2, leading to post-race discussions on accountability. Blaney expressed his frustration, indicating, “I still got turned,” while Larson acknowledged his error, stating, “Yeah, all on me, but wasn’t intentional at all.”
Race Highlights:
- Total Lead Changes: 15 among 9 drivers
- Cautions: 10 for 52 laps

As the playoff race intensifies, upcoming events will determine who advances to the Round of 12, with Bristol Motor Speedway hosting the next critical challenge.
