Hamlin Triumphs at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
In a dramatic showdown at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Denny Hamlin secured victory in the opening race of the Round of 8, showcasing the strategic advantage of fresh tires. Chase Briscoe, who briefly led after a two-tire pit strategy, ultimately finished fourth, expressing frustration over his team’s performance throughout the race.
Briscoe led the first 35 laps but fell to fifth after a botched pit stop during the lap 236 caution. The critical moment came with just four laps remaining, when Hamlin, who had four new tires, swiftly overtook Briscoe, who was struggling on older rubber. “It’s like when you’re pulling off the exit ramp and you’re running 15 miles an hour and they’re running 80,” Briscoe commented afterward.
Initially, Briscoe held a strong position at the front, but the competition tightened after the race resumed with 14 laps to go. Briscoe noted, “I was so loose at the end, and I had nothing left.” His team’s inability to regain the early race balance after hitting the wall during the second stage further complicated his efforts.
Despite the setback, Briscoe’s fourth-place finish yielded a crucial 48 points, boosting his playoff position from 14 points below to 15 points above the transfer spot. “It could have been a lot worse,” he acknowledged.
Looking ahead to the upcoming race at Talladega Superspeedway, he stated, “Our approach doesn’t change. We have to go and race as hard as we can and let the points be what they are.” Hamlin’s win reinforces Joe Gibbs Racing’s strong performance as they continue to navigate the playoff rounds.
