Ruggiero Makes History with First Win at Talladega
Talladega, AL – Rookie Gio Ruggiero claimed an electrifying victory in the Love’s RV Stop 225 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, marking his first career win. The 21-year-old driver, who qualified for the pole position, led 37 of the race’s 90 laps and navigated an intense overtime finish to secure his spot in Victory Lane.
Despite not being in the playoffs, Ruggiero faced off against his Tricon Garage teammate and championship leader Corey Heim in a thrilling two-lap overtime stint. Ruggiero’s No. 17 Toyota crossed the finish line just 0.059 seconds ahead of Heim, who finished second.
“Super thankful to all the guys on this No. 17 truck, they worked their butts off today and definitely brought the best piece,” Ruggiero stated. “Great to win a race with my mom and dad here.”
In the lead-up to the dramatic finish, Ruggiero seized the lead after a collision between race leaders Ben Rhodes and Luke Fenhaus, both driving for ThorSport Racing. Their crash allowed Ruggiero and Heim to capitalize and secure a 1-2 finish.
Heim’s solid performance was noteworthy amid a competitive playoff environment. He remains the only driver guaranteed a spot at the Phoenix finale with a victory in the round’s opening race.
Defending champion Ty Majeski of ThorSport Racing staged a remarkable comeback, finishing third despite an early setback that saw him drop to 34th due to an accident.
The top five was rounded out by rookie Dawson Sutton and Layne Riggs, who overcame a rear-starting position and multiple incidents to take fifth. Riggs remarked on his race experience, saying, “I’m just glad to end the day in one piece.”
Overall, six of the eight playoff drivers finished in the top ten, contributing to a competitive landscape as the series heads toward the decisive race at Martinsville Speedway on October 24. Current standings show Rajah Caruth sitting 14 points above the cutoff line, with Tyler Ankrum and Kaden Honeycutt close behind.
Veteran drivers Daniel Hemric and Grant Enfinger faced tough breaks, finishing 34th and 36th, respectively, and now find themselves in must-win scenarios heading into Martinsville.
As the series transitions to the half-mile track, anticipation builds for the Slim Jim 200, where only four drivers will advance to compete for the championship.
