Ferrari Faces Challenges After Double Retirement at Sao Paulo Grand Prix
Ferrari President John Elkann has urged drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to “focus on driving and talk less” following a disappointing double retirement at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, where the team failed to score any points. This setback has seen Ferrari fall to fourth place in the constructors’ championship, now 36 points behind Mercedes, who occupy the second position.
During the race at Interlagos, Leclerc was involved in a collision initiated by Oscar Piastri and Kimi Antonelli while battling for second place, resulting in his premature exit. Hamilton faced multiple incidents and ultimately retired due to severe damage after receiving a time penalty.
Elkann expressed his disappointment, stating, “Brazil was a huge disappointment. Our mechanics are performing well in the pit stops, and there has been notable improvement from our engineers regarding the car. However, the drivers’ performance has not met expectations.”
He highlighted the importance of unity and focus among the team, particularly as they approach critical remaining races, stressing: “It’s not impossible to get second place.” Elkann’s comments came during an event promoting the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, coinciding with Ferrari’s success in securing World Endurance Championship titles, showcasing the potential for cohesive achievement within the organization.
Leclerc, seemingly acknowledging Elkann’s remarks, emphasized unity in a recent social media post, stating, “Disappointing to come back home with nearly no points… It’s clear that only unity can help us turn that situation around.”
As the championship progresses, Ferrari’s ability to rally and address these internal challenges will be crucial in their pursuit of improved standings in the constructors’ championship.
