Dakar Rally 2026 Preview: American Contenders Gear Up for Challenge
January 2, 2026 (YANBU, Saudi Arabia) – As the Dakar Rally kicks off its 48th edition in Saudi Arabia, three riders from the Monster Energy/Honda HRC Rally Team aim for podium positions: two-time winner Ricky Brabec, former podium finisher Skyler Howes, and rookie Preston Campbell.
Brabec, who made history as the first American to win the prestigious rally in 2020 and defended his title in 2024, brings a wealth of experience to the event. “The Dakar is a test of not just skill, but of endurance and strategy,” he stated as he prepares for the challenging terrain ahead.
Howes, who secured third place in 2023, aims to improve upon his previous performances. His understanding of the unique challenges posed by the rally will be crucial in navigating the grueling stages.
Preston Campbell, son of renowned off-road racer Johnny Campbell, will make his Dakar debut this year with his father providing hands-on support as a consultant for the team. “This is a dream come true for me,” said Campbell, emphasizing his eagerness to learn from seasoned competitors.
The Dakar Rally is not only a pivotal event in the motorsports calendar but also the inaugural round of the 2026 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), reflecting its significance within the off-road racing community. With a mix of seasoned veterans and eager newcomers, the stage is set for an exhilarating two-week contest that will test the limits of man and machine.
