Significant Changes Announced for Supercross 2027
The AMA has officially announced new regulations for the 2027 Supercross season, narrowing class entries and restructuring race formats in a bid to improve rider safety and reduce track deterioration during events.
Key Modifications:
-
Rider Entry Limits: Total entries per class will decrease from 80 to 66. This adjustment supports the AMA’s goal of limiting the number of bikes on the track to 22 at any given time and managing three qualifying groups (A, B, and C).
-
Qualifying and Heat Races: The “Fast 38” will qualify for heat races, with 19 riders competing per heat—down from 20 in 2026. Only the top eight riders from each heat will advance to the main event, compared to nine in the previous season. Four riders will still qualify from the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ).
-
Main Event Structure: The main event will now feature 20 riders instead of 22, effectively reducing the number of lapped riders and addressing ongoing concerns regarding track safety.
-
Points System Overhaul: The points allocation will revert to a traditional structure, reflecting the changes in main event participation. The new points system for 2027 is as follows:
| Position | Points 2026 | Points 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 25 | 25 |
| 2 | 22 | 22 |
| 3 | 20 | 20 |
| 4 | 18 | 18 |
| 5 | 17 | 16 |
| 6 | 16 | 15 |
| 7 | 15 | 14 |
| 8 | 14 | 13 |
| 9 | 13 | 12 |
| 10 | 12 | 11 |
| 11 | 11 | 10 |
| 12 | 10 | 9 |
| 13 | 9 | 8 |
| 14 | 8 | 7 |
| 15 | 7 | 6 |
| 16 | 6 | 5 |
| 17 | 5 | 4 |
| 18 | 4 | 3 |
| 19 | 3 | 2 |
| 20 | 2 | 1 |
The AMA asserts that these changes will create a safer environment for competitors while maintaining the competitive spirit of the sport. As the 2027 season approaches, the implications of these adjustments will be critical for teams and riders alike.
