New Sound Regulation Set for 2027 AMA Supercross Championship
ELLENTON, Fla./MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The SMX League announced a new 109 dB maximum sound standard for the 2027 AMA Supercross Championship, effective January 9, 2027, at the Monster Energy SMX World Championship season opener in Anaheim, California. This rule aims to foster sustainability within the sport while enhancing participation opportunities across the U.S.
The reduction from the current 112 dB limit is a 3 dB decrease, which research indicates will significantly lower trackside sound impacts. Key stakeholders across the industry, including manufacturers and regulatory bodies, collaborated to develop this standard.
Roger De Coster, Motorsports Director at KTM North America, emphasized the importance of protecting competitive environments: “Supporting the long-term health of our sport means taking responsible steps that help… strengthen the future of competition.” Similarly, Derek Brooks, Sr. Mgr. of Motorsports Business Management at Yamaha, highlighted a collaborative process that balances performance with growth sustainability.
Brandon Wilson from American Honda noted, “This updated 109 dB limit allows for a more streamlined approach to development and production through a single global specification,” reflecting a broader industry commitment to sound reduction.
Mike Wroblewski of the SMX League stated, “By working in alignment with the AMA and our manufacturer partners, we are establishing a standard that supports the long-term strength of our events.” The aim is to enhance communication within venues, improve fan experience, and bolster broadcast quality.
This initiative has drawn support from all manufacturers involved in SMX League events. Technical guidance will be provided to teams and racers to facilitate compliance before the season kick-off.
Kawasaki’s Dan Fahie remarked, “This updated standard represents a balanced approach that supports both competitive performance and environmental responsibility.” Other manufacturers, including Suzuki, Ducati, and Triumph, echoed similar sentiments regarding community impact and innovation.
As the 2027 season approaches, the SMX League and its partners are committed to ensuring a seamless transition to the new sound regulation, reinforcing the commitment to the future of off-road motorcycle racing.
