Logano Disqualified After Strong Finish at Talladega
Joey Logano’s promising fifth-place finish in the Jack Link’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway was marred by a disqualification due to an equipment violation. In post-race inspection, Logano’s No. 22 Ford Mustang was found to have a critical component missing—a nut securing the spoiler, leading to the assessment of a penalty.
Originally, Logano had accumulated 41 points from his finish and stage performance, marking what would have been his first top-five result of the season. However, the disqualification relegated him to 39th place in the final standings, resulting in a drastic drop to only one point for participating in the event.
Reflecting on the situation, Logano stated, “Team Penske, we’re not the people who blatantly are going to go out there and cheat. It was a mistake… Does it give you a competitive advantage? I’m sure it does a little bit. Did it change where we finished in the race? No.” Logano acknowledged the necessity of accepting the penalty, emphasizing the importance of adhering to regulations.
Team Penske chose not to appeal the decision, affirming that the incident was unintentional. Logano, the reigning Cup Series champion, has faced a challenging season, with only one top-10 finish in 12 races and an average finish of 19.7, now sitting 11th in the championship standings. Had it not been for the disqualification, he would have been positioned eighth.
Logano remarked on the broader implications of the penalty: "It’s a 40-point penalty… Not to mention the financial impact as well for (going from) fifth to last. It’s not ideal by any means."
The team now looks toward Texas Motor Speedway, where the series will resume on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET, a critical moment as Logano seeks to rebound from this setback and improve his standings in the championship race.
