Müller Returns to WEC with Porsche Penske Motorsport Ahead of Le Mans
Nico Müller, the Andretti Formula E driver, is set to make his return to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Spa-Francorchamps, marking his first race since the conclusion of the 2024 season in Bahrain. The Swiss driver joins Porsche Penske Motorsport’s Hypercar team, filling a seat left vacant due to scheduling conflicts with the IMSA weekend at Laguna Seca.
Müller will pilot the #5 963 alongside teammates Michael Christensen and Julien Andlauer as part of the team’s preparations for the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans next month. “I am excited, happy and grateful,” Müller stated at Spa. “It’s a phenomenal track, and I’m just excited to enjoy the moment. We want to do a good race and get the team ready for Le Mans.”
This marks Müller’s first race with Porsche after a stint with Peugeot. While he has experience in a Hypercar, Müller acknowledges the distinct differences between the LMH-spec 9X8 and the LMDh-spec 963. “There are some specification differences, but I quickly felt comfortable,” he noted, emphasizing that the transition has been manageable.
Müller has limited experience in the 963, having made his debut at the Sebring 12 Hours with privateer team JDC-Miller, where he finished eighth in GTP. Reflecting on that experience, he remarked, “I had never driven the car before, and Sebring is not the most straightforward track to learn a new car. Overall, it worked really well.”
Müller, currently under contract with Porsche, expressed uncertainty about future racing commitments, particularly regarding a simultaneous program in Formula E and WEC. “It’s not up to me whether I have a double programme or not,” he explained.
As he prepares for Le Mans, Müller emphasizes the importance of gaining race experience ahead of the event. “If they need me in the race, it’s already far from optimal. You take every bit of mileage you can get,” he stated, underscoring the challenges that lie ahead.
With all eyes on Le Mans, Müller’s focus remains clear: to deliver optimal performance for himself and the Porsche team.
