Jimmie Johnson Addresses Retirement Rumors Ahead of Milestone Race
Charlotte, NC – Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson has countered retirement speculations as he prepares for his 700th Cup Series start at this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he made his debut in 2001.
In a recent appearance on the Rubbin’ is Racing podcast, Johnson expressed his surprise at the retirement discussions linked to this milestone. "It really is just luck that the 700th start ends up at Charlotte. I wasn’t paying attention to those numbers," he stated. He confirmed that there are no immediate plans to retire, emphasizing his commitment to continue racing.
Johnson, co-owner of Legacy Motor Club, indicated that he hopes to participate in additional races this season, contingent on circumstances. "I could help build the team and put me in the car a fair amount next year," he added.
Earlier in the season, Johnson achieved a notable third-place finish at the Daytona 500, evoking memories of his 2013 victory. Reflecting on the experience, he said, "This feels incredible… the pride that I have in this result and the pride that I have in this company" highlights his evolving role as an owner.
Historically, only 20 drivers have reached 700 or more Cup starts, with Kyle Busch being the only active driver alongside Johnson to achieve this milestone following the upcoming race.
