Denny Hamlin Faces 700th Start in Uncertain Circumstances
Nashville, TN – Denny Hamlin is poised to make his 700th career start in the NASCAR Cup Series this Sunday at the Nashville Superspeedway. However, the impending birth of his first son may affect his participation. Hamlin’s partner, Jordan Fish, is due on June 1, coinciding with race day.
In the event Hamlin is unable to start, Ryan Truex, brother of 2017 champion Martin Truex Jr., will take over the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Truex has not competed in the Cup Series since 2014 but has recently shown form in the Xfinity Series, with three wins this season.
Hamlin is set to start from the outside of the front row, alongside teammate Chase Briscoe, who secured pole position. Should Hamlin begin the race but leave mid-event, he will receive credit for the final position. Conversely, if he misses the start, Truex will drive from the rear of the field.
NASCAR has implemented a stricter playoff waiver policy for 2025, but the birth of a child qualifies as a valid medical reason for missing a race, thus ensuring Hamlin retains his playoff eligibility if he is unable to compete.
As the race approaches, the dynamics of Hamlin’s potential absence emphasize the impact personal circumstances can have on professional competition.
