Verstappen Masters Emilia-Romagna GP with Strategic Overtake
Imola, Italy – Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive victory at the 2025 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, demonstrating exceptional racecraft and keen strategic awareness in a critical overtaking maneuver during the opening lap.
Despite a sluggish start that saw George Russell temporarily claim third position, Verstappen swiftly regained his footing. By the end of Turn 3, he had outbraked Oscar Piastri, seizing the lead at the Tamburello chicane. Reflecting on the move, Verstappen remarked, “At one point, I was in third on the straight… I just braked a bit later than all the others!”
Analyzing the technical aspects of Verstappen’s overtake reveals a meticulously executed strategy. He adeptly positioned his Red Bull RB21 on the racing line, ensuring optimal grip and control, which inhibited any attempts from competitors to encroach upon his trajectory. Verstappen’s timing and braking precision allowed him to carry nearly 30 km/h more speed into the braking zone compared to Piastri.
Data indicates that while both drivers reached similar peak speeds—Verstappen at 289 km/h and Piastri at 288 km/h—Piastri lifted off the throttle earlier. This resulted in Verstappen entering the braking zone approximately 30 km/h faster. Verstappen described the moment succinctly: “When I braked late and then released the brake pedal, I thought, ‘okay, maybe this move is on.’”
Piastri acknowledged the challenge posed by Verstappen’s maneuver, stating, “I thought I had it pretty under control, and it was a good move from Max. I’ll learn for next time.” He noted a critical adjustment he would make: “I think I would brake about 10 meters later,” aligning with the pre-race telemetry data showing his earlier lift contributed to his slower entry.
The combination of Verstappen’s racing line and late-braking maneuver—dubbed "a win it or bin it move" by Red Bull’s Christian Horner—exemplified the nuances of high-stakes racing, securing Verstappen’s supremacy in the championship standings. His comments encapsulated a sense of calculated risk: “A move like this is never easy, but luckily, everything went well.”
Verstappen’s victory at Imola highlights both his individual brilliance and Red Bull’s formidable pace as the season progresses.
