British Grand Prix: Piastri’s Disappointment Amid Norris’s Victory
Silverstone, UK – The 2023 British Grand Prix unfolded with high drama, particularly for McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who finished second behind his teammate Lando Norris after incurring a 10-second penalty for erratic braking during a safety car period.
On lap 21, with a second safety car deployed, Piastri braked sharply on the Hangar Straight, catching Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by surprise. Verstappen, who narrowly avoided collision, expressed his frustrations over team radio, stating, “Whoa, mate ****, he just suddenly slows down again.” The incident resulted in Piastri serving a penalty during his pit stop, allowing Norris to ascend to the top of the podium.
Post-race, Piastri’s irritation was palpable. When asked about the incident, he responded, “Yeah, I’m not gonna say much. I’ll get myself in trouble… well done to Hulkenberg. I think that’s the highlight of the day." His comments hinted at his displeasure with the penalty but acknowledged the race’s challenges.
Further elaborating on the penalty, Piastri remarked, “I got a 10-second penalty for braking behind the safety car. I hit the brakes basically as the lights went out on the safety car.” Despite leading for a significant portion of the race, his performance was overshadowed by the subsequent penalty, which tightened the point gap in the standings, now reduced to eight points between him and Norris.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown commented on the race dynamics, stating, “The safety car seemed like it was called in a bit late… Max accelerated; Oscar braked, which made it look worse than it was. The telemetry didn’t reflect what was seen on TV.” He noted the challenge of maintaining tire temperature in wet conditions contributed to the incident’s complexity.
As the teams regroup post-race, Piastri’s technical performance remains a focal point for McLaren as they assess strategy moving forward.
