F1 Secures Major Streaming Deal with Apple to Enhance U.S. Presence
October 25, 2023 — Formula 1 has announced a landmark broadcasting partnership with Apple, set to commence in 2026. This five-year agreement will see Apple replace ESPN as the official U.S. broadcaster, transitioning the sport from traditional cable to a streaming-centric model.
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “In the U.S., to be relevant, you need to start to be part of the culture,” and expressed confidence that Apple’s reach would help embed F1 into American households. He noted, “Apple is more than a platform. It’s a social movement,” suggesting that F1 aims to convert casual viewers into dedicated fans akin to the NFL or NBA audiences.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, echoed Domenicali’s sentiments, pointing to F1’s growth potential in the U.S. market. He remarked, “The growth opportunity is huge,” and highlighted that the sport’s unique scheduling could mitigate competition with other sporting events. This collaboration aims to leverage Apple’s extensive technology and innovative capabilities to enhance the viewing experience.
Both F1 and Apple have assured stakeholders that this strategic shift will not result in diminished viewer numbers. Ian Holmes, F1’s Chief Media Rights and Broadcasting Officer, mentioned ongoing advancements in camera technology and immersive experiences like AR and VR, signaling a commitment to elevating the broadcast quality.
This partnership marks a bold move for F1 as it seeks to significantly enhance its visibility and cultural relevance in the United States, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in the sport’s history.
