Audi Previews F1 Entry with R26 Concept Car
Audi has officially introduced the R26 concept car, providing a glimpse into its Formula 1 team identity ahead of its 2026 debut. The unveiling took place at the Brand Experience Center in Munich, showcasing a livery featuring titanium, carbon black, and a new shade of Audi red. The final design will be revealed in January, but Audi emphasizes a minimalist aesthetic with geometric precision that integrates seamlessly with the vehicle’s geometry.
Audi is assuming control of the existing Sauber team, establishing a multifaceted operational structure. Chassis development will occur at Sauber’s Hinwil, Switzerland headquarters, while engine production is set for the Audi Formula Racing GmbH facility in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany. Additionally, a technology office in Bicester, England, opened this year to leverage talent from neighboring teams.
Jurgen Rittersberger, Audi’s CFO, emphasized the multifaceted nature of F1: “It’s entertainment, emotion, technology – and also a challenge. This combination allows us to inspire new customer groups for Audi.” He noted the potential to attract younger audiences, which is critical as the sport’s popularity surges. The implementation of a cost cap also enhances the financial sustainability of F1, making it an opportune investment for Audi.
Announced in summer 2022, Audi’s involvement with Sauber has progressed with the construction of a new 3,300 sq. ft. facility in Neuburg and successful initial testing of a new power unit in May 2024. While specific sponsors were not disclosed, Revolut will serve as the title partner, with Adidas securing an apparel partnership for the team.
With an ambitious target to challenge for the F1 title by 2030, Audi’s strategic entry reinforces its commitment to becoming a formidable presence in the motorsports arena.
